The English and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool together, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa before the final, assuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
