This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government. A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties. "Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed. The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics. Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved. Broader Political Consultations Underway In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests. Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
