The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
